Neff, K. D., & Pommier, E. (2013)
Neff, K. D., & Pommier, E. (2013). The relationship between self-compassion and other-focused concern among college undergraduates, community adults, and practicing meditators. Self and Identity, 12(2), 160–176.
Why you're reading this
The near-zero correlation that shouldn't be: kindness to others and kindness to self are separate systems — especially at your age. Commit to a predicted correlation BEFORE reading.
How to read it (the roadmap)
Three samples (undergrads, community adults, meditators); track how the SC↔other-compassion link changes across them.
Extract these — exam and discussion fuel
- Undergraduates: essentially no correlation between SC and compassion for others
- Community adults: modest link; meditators: strongest
- What this implies: the selfless-but-self-brutal helper is the DEFAULT, not a paradox
- The integration hypothesis: practice knits the two directions together
Traps
Resist reading the meditator finding as simple causation — meditators self-select. It's suggestive of integration-through-practice, not proof.
Questions to bring to class
- Were you surprised? What was your predicted r, and what does the gap teach you about your intuitions?
- If the systems are separate, what does that mean for how helping professions should train people?
General permission that applies to every paper: you are allowed to skim the statistics you haven't learned yet. Extract the design and the direction of findings; let the Greek letters wash over you. The exam tests design logic and findings, never decimals.
