Neff, K. D., Hsieh, Y.-P., & Dejitterat, K. (2005). Self-compassion, achievement goals, and coping with academic failure. Self and Identity, 4(3), 263–287.
Why you're reading this
The correlational complement: WHY kindness outperforms the whip, in the vocabulary of achievement-goal theory — with a real disappointing midterm as the test case.
How to read it (the roadmap)
Two studies. Learn the mastery/performance goal distinction first (the intro teaches it); then track which goals and coping styles self-compassion travels with.
Extract these — exam and discussion fuel
- Mastery goals (learning for its own sake) vs. performance goals (proving/hiding)
- SC ↔ mastery orientation; SC ↔ less fear of failure
- After an actual disappointing midterm: acceptance and reframing, not avoidance and denial
- How this supplies the MECHANISM for Breines & Chen's experimental effects
Traps
Correlational — say 'travels with,' not 'causes,' and notice how the two week-4 papers cover each other's weaknesses: one has causation, the other has real-world grades.
Questions to bring to class
- Map your own last academic disappointment: which goals and which coping did you run?
- Why would fear of failure produce procrastination? Trace the chain.
General permission that applies to every paper: you are allowed to skim the statistics you haven't learned yet. Extract the design and the direction of findings; let the Greek letters wash over you. The exam tests design logic and findings, never decimals.
