Why you're reading this
Three cultures, one construct — and a ranking that breaks the East/West story. Also your introduction to the idea that culture installs baselines while benefits travel.
How to read it (the roadmap)
Commit to predicted rankings before reading. Then track: the actual rankings, the cultural explanations offered, and the within-country SC→wellbeing links.
Extract these — exam and discussion fuel
- Thailand highest, Taiwan LOWEST, US middle — and why that pattern falsifies 'Buddhist cultures score high'
- The proposed installers: Thai warmth/jai yen vs. Taiwanese self-criticism-as-virtue
- Self-construal (independent/interdependent) and its partial role
- In all three countries: higher SC predicted better wellbeing
- The measurement-invariance caveat for any cross-country comparison
Traps
Three convenience samples ≠ three cultures; and remember translation issues cut both ways. The strong claim isn't the exact rankings — it's that specific socialization practices, not hemisphere or religion, set the baseline.
Questions to bring to class
- What does Taiwan's ranking do to week 4's motivation debate? Is there a cultural boundary condition on 'the whip doesn't work'?
- Which self-relation practices did YOUR upbringing install?
General permission that applies to every paper: you are allowed to skim the statistics you haven't learned yet. Extract the design and the direction of findings; let the Greek letters wash over you. The exam tests design logic and findings, never decimals.
