Attraction & Close Relationships

Why do we like the people we like — and love the people we love? The folk answers ("opposites attract," "love is a mystery") turn out to be mostly wrong, and the real answers are mostly ordinary: who's nearby, who's familiar, who's like us. This page is about those unglamorous engines, and about what keeps a relationship running after the spark.

Attraction research has a reputation problem: it sounds like it should be either obvious or unknowable. It's neither. The field's core findings are specific, replicated, and frequently the opposite of what people predict about themselves. Almost nobody says "I'll probably fall for whoever happens to sit near me and show up a lot" — and yet proximity and familiarity are two of the strongest forces in the literature. Keep the course's running lesson in view: the situation is doing more work than the story we tell about our own hearts.

One organizing sentence for the whole topic: attraction runs on proximity, familiarity, similarity, and attractiveness — roughly in the order you'd least like to admit. The romantic story says souls find each other; the data say seating charts do a lot of the matchmaking.

Proximity: the seating chart is a matchmaker

The oldest finding in the area is almost embarrassingly simple: we befriend and fall for the people who are physically near us. In a classic study of a married-student housing complex, Festinger, Schachter, and Back (1950) mapped who became friends with whom. Distance ruled. Next-door neighbors were far more likely to be close friends than people two doors away; people whose apartments sat near stairwells and mailboxes — high-traffic spots — collected more friendships than identical apartments in quiet corners. Nobody chose their apartment to engineer a social life, but the floor plan quietly engineered it anyway.

Why would sheer nearness matter so much? Partly the obvious: proximity makes interaction cheap, and you can't like someone you never encounter. But the deeper mechanism is the next finding — nearness produces repeated exposure, and repeated exposure, all by itself, breeds liking.

Mere exposure: familiarity breeds liking, not contempt

The mere exposure effect (Zajonc, 1968) is one of social psychology's sturdiest results: simply encountering a stimulus repeatedly — with no reward, no interaction, no information — makes us like it more. Zajonc showed it with nonsense words, Chinese characters, and yearbook faces; a large meta-analysis spanning two decades of research confirmed the effect across hundreds of studies (Bornstein, 1989). This is one of the classics that has held up well.

The demonstration to remember is Moreland and Beach (1992). Four women, matched for appearance, attended a large college lecture course 0, 5, 10, or 15 times. They never spoke to anyone — they just sat there. At semester's end, students rated the women they'd seen more often as more attractive, more interesting, and more likable — despite being unable to recognize them and having exchanged not one word. Attendance alone did it. If you've ever found a classmate growing oddly appealing by week ten, you've run this study on yourself.

Why familiarity works — and its limit

The favored explanation is processing fluency: familiar things are easier for the brain to process, that ease feels vaguely good, and the good feeling gets attributed to the thing itself. The limit matters too: exposure amplifies an initial reaction more than it reverses one. Something you start out disliking can grow more grating with repetition, not less. Mere exposure is a volume knob, not a sign flipper.

Physical attractiveness: the halo we pretend not to have

People underrate how much looks matter — specifically, they underrate how much looks matter to them. In the famous "computer dance" study (Walster, Aronson, Abrahams, & Rottman, 1966), first-year students were randomly paired for a dance after filling out batteries of personality and aptitude measures. Of everything measured, the only meaningful predictor of wanting a second date was the partner's physical attractiveness. Intelligence, values, personality — in that first encounter, none of it moved the needle the way looks did.

Attractiveness also distorts what we believe about people. The what-is-beautiful-is-good effect (Dion, Berscheid, & Walster, 1972) — a specialty case of the halo effect from the Social Perception page — has attractive people judged as happier, more sociable, and more successful, sight unseen otherwise. A meta-analysis of decades of work (Langlois et al., 2000) confirmed the halo is real and consequential: attractive children and adults are judged more favorably and treated better, even by people who know them. The stereotype is strongest for social competence; there's little evidence beautiful people are actually more intelligent or better-adjusted — the halo says more about the perceiver than the perceived.

Two honest wrinkles. First, the matching hypothesis: despite everyone preferring attractiveness in the abstract, actual couples tend to be similar to each other in attractiveness — we pair off, roughly, with people in our own league, partly because courting far above it invites rejection. Second, a finding that should soften how you read all of this: stated preferences predict surprisingly little. In speed-dating research, what people said they wanted in a partner (men claiming to prioritize looks, women claiming to prioritize earning prospects) failed to predict whom they actually liked once they met live humans face to face (Eastwick & Finkel, 2008). We are unreliable narrators of our own attractions.

Similarity — and the "opposites attract" myth

Ask a room who believes "opposites attract" and hands go up; it's one of the most popular folk theories of romance. It is also, as a general claim about attraction, wrong — and it's been wrong in the data for a very long time.

The myth

Opposites attract: we're drawn to people whose personalities, attitudes, and styles complement our own by contrast — fire finds ice.

What the research finds

Similarity attracts — consistently. Decades of work in the attraction paradigm (Byrne, 1971) found liking rises almost linearly with the proportion of attitudes shared. Couples resemble each other in values, background, religiosity, politics, and (per the matching hypothesis) attractiveness. Meta-analytically there's essentially no reliable evidence for complementarity as a general engine of attraction (Montoya, Horton, & Kirchner, 2008).

The interesting nuance in that meta-analysis is worth knowing, because it's subtler than "similarity wins." Montoya and colleagues (2008) separated actual similarity (measured agreement) from perceived similarity (believing you're alike). In laboratory encounters, actual similarity strongly predicted attraction. But in existing relationships, perceived similarity predicted attraction better than actual similarity did. Feeling like kindred spirits does more for a real couple than being demonstrably alike on questionnaires. As a summary: similarity lights the match; the belief in similarity keeps it burning.

Why does similarity work? Someone who shares your views validates them — agreement is quiet, constant flattery ("this person thinks like me, and I think well"). Shared attitudes also make interaction smoother, conflict rarer, and joint plans easier. And we expect similar others to like us back — and believing someone likes you (reciprocity of liking) is itself among the most reliable attractors in the literature.

Misattribution of arousal: the shaky bridge

Here's the topic's most famous single study. Dutton and Aron (1974) stationed an attractive female interviewer on two bridges in British Columbia: a terrifying 450-foot suspension bridge that swayed over a canyon, and a low, solid bridge upstream. She asked male passersby to fill out a short survey and offered her phone number in case they had questions. Men interviewed on the scary bridge were substantially more likely to call her afterward — and wove more romantic and sexual imagery into their survey responses — than men on the safe bridge.

The interpretation is misattribution of arousal, a direct descendant of Schachter's two-factor theory of emotion: arousal is physiologically generic (racing heart, tight stomach), and we label it using whatever the situation offers. Heart pounding from a swaying bridge, attractive person in view — some of the fear gets read as attraction. The general principle has survived beyond the bridge: arousal from exercise, fright, even anxiety can intensify attraction to a person encountered while keyed up. It's why the horror movie is a canonical date.

Read the bridge study like a methodologist

You've had the methods page; use it. The bridge study is a field study without random assignment — men chose which bridge to cross. Maybe thrill-seekers pick scary bridges and call strange women, no misattribution required. Dutton and Aron knew this; the paper also includes lab experiments (e.g., men expecting painful shocks rated a female confederate as more attractive) that support the arousal story under better control. The famous version is the bridge; the convincing version is the package. That's a pattern worth noticing throughout this course: the memorable study and the rigorous study are often different studies.

From liking to love: two kinds, three ingredients

Liking a classmate and loving a partner of twenty years are not the same state scaled up. The field's most durable distinction (Berscheid & Hatfield) separates passionate love — the intense, preoccupied, arousal-soaked longing of early romance — from companionate love — the deep affection, intimacy, and interdependence of established bonds. Passionate love is largely what the misattribution machinery above feeds; it typically cools with time. Companionate love is what's left when it does — and in long, satisfied relationships, it's the load-bearing wall.

Sternberg's (1986) triangular theory gives the standard map: love is built from intimacy (closeness, warmth, connection), passion (physical attraction, arousal), and commitment (the decision to stay). Different combinations name the recognizable varieties — passion alone is infatuation; intimacy plus passion without commitment is romantic love; intimacy plus commitment as passion cools is companionate love; and all three together is the "consummate" ideal the theory treats as hard to sustain.

Each edge combines its two corners: intimacy + passion = romantic love; intimacy + commitment = companionate love; passion + commitment = fatuous love. All three at once — consummate love — is the aspiration; companionate love is what most enduring relationships actually run on.

Why relationships last: the investment model

Attraction gets a relationship started; something else keeps it running. The best-supported account of staying is Rusbult's (1983) investment model, which says commitment — the intention to persist — is fed by three streams: satisfaction (the relationship rewards you), poor alternatives (nothing better looks available), and investment (everything you've sunk in that you'd lose — time, history, mutual friends, shared home, entangled identities). Longitudinal studies of couples found all three independently predicting who stayed together months later.

The model's uncomfortable strength is that it explains persistence without requiring happiness: someone deeply invested, with poor alternatives, may stay in an unsatisfying — even harmful — relationship. That's not an endorsement; it's an explanation, and it's why the model became central to research on why people remain in abusive partnerships. Commitment is not the same thing as satisfaction, and the model is the cleanest statement of the difference.

Where the field is now — attraction in the age of the swipe

A large share of couples now meet through apps, which makes the classic findings newly practical. A major review (Finkel, Eastwick, Karney, Reis, & Sprecher, 2012) reached two conclusions worth carrying around. First, online dating genuinely expands access to potential partners — proximity's old monopoly is broken. Second, the matching algorithms' central marketing claim fails: profiles and questionnaires cannot reliably predict which two people will click in person, for the same reason the speed-dating studies found — stated preferences and checklist traits are weak predictors of live chemistry. The screen widens the pool; it still can't tell you who you'll like. That, so far, still requires showing up — which is where proximity and mere exposure quietly resume their old jobs.

The one thing to carry out of this topic

Attraction feels like fate and works like plumbing. Who's nearby, who you've seen before, who resembles you, who's attractive and believes you like them — those mundane variables do most of what we romantically attribute to destiny, and our introspective reports about our own preferences are demonstrably unreliable (Eastwick & Finkel, 2008). None of this makes love less real; it makes it more explicable. And the practical corollaries are almost cheerful: show up places repeatedly, sit near people, let familiarity do its quiet work — and judge your relationships less by the fading heat of passion than by the intimacy and commitment that outlast it.
