Your notes give you the cast — Wundt, James, Freud, Watson, the Gestaltists — in order. This page gives you the plot. Because the fastest way to forget twenty names is to memorize them as twenty names. The faster way to keep them is to see that they're all answering the same handful of questions, just in different centuries.
Bodhi says
Ebbinghaus's line — "psychology has a long past but a short history" — is the whole unit in nine words. The questions (What is the mind? Is it inborn or learned? How do we study it?) are thousands of years old. Psychology as a science is barely 145 years old. Everything after Wundt is people trying to answer ancient questions with new tools.
The three arguments that never end
Almost every figure in the lecture is staking out a position on one of these. Once you can name the argument, you can place the person.
Mind & body
Dualism (Descartes): mind and body are different kinds of stuff that somehow interact. Monism / materialism (Hobbes): it's all physical — thought is what the brain's machinery does. Modern psychology runs on monism; that's why we can study the mind by studying the brain.
Nature & nurture
Nativism (Plato, Kant): some knowledge is built in. Empiricism (Aristotle, Locke): the mind starts as a tabula rasa and experience writes on it. Kant's move — "both, and they need each other" — is the version we still hold.
◆ The third argument: structure vs. function
Should we describe what the mind is made of, or what it's for? That single question splits the first two schools of scientific psychology — and it's the one students mix up most. So let's nail it.
Structuralism vs. functionalism — don't confuse these
Structuralism (Wundt, Titchener)
Goal: break consciousness into its basic elements, like a chemistry of the mind. Method: introspection — trained observers reporting their own sensations. Question: What is consciousness made of?
Functionalism (James)
Goal: understand what mental activities do for us — how they help us adapt. Inspired by Darwin. Question: What is consciousness for? This is the branch that survived and fed into modern psychology.
A memory hook: Structuralism = structure (parts). Functionalism = function (purpose). Wundt wanted the periodic table of the mind; James wanted to know why the mind earns its keep.
Why introspection failed — and why it matters
Introspection sounds reasonable: who knows your mind better than you? But it collapsed for a reason worth remembering, because the same problem haunts psychology today. When Külpe's group asked people to lift two weights and say which was heavier, they could do it — yet they had no idea how. The judgment happened below awareness. That's the fatal flaw: much of the mind is not available to consciousness. Reports were also private and unverifiable — two trained observers would disagree and there was no way to settle it. Psychology's later obsession with observable, replicable measurement is a direct overcorrection to this failure.
The schools, as rival answers
Read these not as a timeline but as a debate where each side is reacting to the last:
- Structuralism asked what the mind is made of — and couldn't measure it reliably.
- Functionalism asked what the mind is for — and opened the door to applied, evolutionary thinking.
- Psychoanalysis (Freud) said the real action is unconscious — powerful as a story, weak as testable science.
- Behaviorism (Watson, Skinner) reacted hard: forget the unobservable mind entirely — study only stimulus, response, and consequence. It bought rigor at the cost of everything interesting (language, memory, thought).
- Gestalt pushed back on structuralism's atom-counting: "the whole differs from the sum of its parts" — you hear a melody, not a list of notes.
- Humanism (Maslow, Rogers) rejected the determinism of both Freud and Skinner — people have growth, choice, self-actualization.
- The cognitive revolution (1950s–70s) brought the mind back, now modeled on the computer: input, processing, output. This is essentially the paradigm you're studying in.
◆ Zeitgeist & paradigm — the deeper point
Boring called the driver of these shifts the Zeitgeist — the spirit of the age. Kuhn called the dominant framework a paradigm. The claim underneath the whole unit: the questions a science even thinks to ask are shaped by its era's tools and assumptions. The cognitive revolution didn't happen because someone was smart; it happened when the computer gave psychologists a new metaphor for "internal processing." Today, fMRI is doing the same thing — the tools are steering the questions again.
A quick, honest timeline
- ~1600s Descartes (dualism) and Hobbes (materialism) frame mind vs. body.
- 1690 Locke's empiricism — the mind as blank slate.
- 1781 Kant synthesizes nativism + empiricism — the modern nature/nurture debate begins.
- 1859 Darwin's Origin of Species — behavior can be studied for its function.
- 1879 Wundt opens the Leipzig lab — the usual "birthday" of scientific psychology.
- 1890 James publishes Principles of Psychology.
- 1900 Freud's Interpretation of Dreams.
- 1913 Watson's behaviorist manifesto.
- 1956 Miller's "magical number seven"; the cognitive revolution ignites.
- 1967 Neisser's Cognitive Psychology names the field.
▲ What the standard timeline leaves out
The classic list is overwhelmingly white and male — not because others weren't there, but because they were shut out and later under-cited. Worth knowing: Francis Cecil Sumner (1920), the first African American to earn a psychology PhD, mentored a generation at Howard. Mary Whiton Calkins completed every requirement for a Harvard PhD and was refused the degree because she was a woman — then became the first female president of the APA anyway. Kenneth & Mamie Clark's doll studies on racial identity were cited in Brown v. Board of Education (1954), one of psychology's clearest marks on public life. A history of psychology that skips them isn't neutral — it's just incomplete.
◆ The newest paradigm shift (worth updating your mental model)
Since roughly 2011, psychology has been living through a replication crisis — the discovery that many famous findings don't reliably reproduce. The response has been a genuine paradigm shift toward open science: preregistering hypotheses, sharing data, and running large replications. If Kuhn is right that tools and norms reshape a field, this is history happening in real time — you're studying psychology during one of its self-corrections.
The one thing to carry out of this unit
Psychology's history isn't a museum — it's an unfinished argument. Every "school" is a bet about what the mind is and how to study it, and the bets keep getting re-placed as the tools change. When you meet a new theory later this semester, the useful reflex is: which old argument is this a new move in? That reflex will outlast any name on the timeline.
